Big Horn Mine Trail

Big Horn Mine Trail is located at Vincent Gap, just outside of Wrightwood. The trail itself is fairly easy and straightforward, but a sinkhole has had Hwy 2 closed from Grassy Hollow to Hwy 39 since June 9, 2017. This closure adds 5.5 miles and 1000 feet of elevation gain to the trek down from Grassy Hollow to the trailhead.

Once at the trailhead, follow the signs to Big Horn Mine on your right (going left takes you to the summit of Baden-Powell). You’ll hit another sign that points up towards the mine. Follow the sign.

There is a little shade on the trails, but not much, so plan accordingly. There has also been some trail erosion due to landslides after all the rain we had. If narrow trails with large drop offs are not your thing, it may be best to avoid this trail.

After coming around a few bends hugging the face of Baden-Powell (and with spectacular views of Mount and West Baldy), you’ll see the mine off in the distance. The structure of the mine itself seems pretty sturdy, but you should definitely explore at your own risk. It is clear that there were barriers in place (chain link fence, iron gate) at one time that have since been taken down; I have to assume by vandals.

I have heard others say this is a kid friendly hike. And, at one time, it may have been. However, with the condition of the trail itself right now, and the hazards present at the mine, I would not recommend this hike for children.

So, if you don’t want to wait for Hwy 2 to reopen, venture out to Big Horn Mine Trail for the day! Bring lots of water and have tons of fun.
