Big Pine Lakes

When SoCal hikers think of bucket list destinations, one of the first places to come to mind is Big Pine Lakes. With it’s crystal blue glacial waters and Eastern Sierras locale, it’s the perfect spot to explore for a few days. But, securing an overnight permit, especially on a weekend, is right up there with securing a permit to Whitney or Half Dome. So, if you’ve been wanting to visit, but have had no luck in the permit department, I’m here to share a little secret:

Dayhikers do not need a permit! Say what?

That’s right! If you want to trek in, have lunch and enjoy the view for the day, you’re in luck. I highly suggest waiting until October to visit as the leaves are starting to turn and the colors on the trees are just spectacular. But don’t wait too long! Winter weather creeps in pretty quickly to the area and before long, the trails will be covered in the softest of powdery snow.

Lake 2 via the North Fork Trail is the perfect destination for an out and back day hike. The trail follows Big Pine Creek, complete with two waterfalls on your way up. You’ll pass through a beautiful forested area, manzanitas and encounter a few creek crossings. Don’t let the forest fool you though. The hike is mostly exposed. And if you do decide to trek up during the summer months, be sure to bring plenty of water or a filter (this trail has numerous spots available for filtering water).

Depending on where you stop at Lake 2 for the day, will ultimately determine your total mileage and altitude gain. When I visited a few weeks ago, my group opted to visit the beach at Lake 2 just beyond Lake 1. Our roundtrip was 9.6 miles with just under 2000 feet of elevation gain. And the views that awaited us as we approached the beach can only be described as breathtaking. Take a look below to see some of the highlights. Temple Crag off in the distance did not disappoint and, along with the fall colors, was the highlight for me.
