“It’s that time of year, Christmas is here; everybody’s back together again. Spreading the joy. Spreading the cheer. Toasting to another year’s end.” Yeah, yeah. It’s an ‘NSYNC Christmas song. But, it gets stuck in my head. Which gets me thinking. Christmas and the Holiday season is all about giving. That one time of year we’re forced to think of others instead of ourselves. But why just in December? Why not all year long? Maybe our toast at the end of the year should be to help others throughout 2018. And, we can start by donating. Why not take a look at the Border Angels organization?
Right in the middle of the holiday season, I had the honor and privilege of taking some of my fellow Mountain Chicks out for a water drop with the Border Angels. We met at the community center in San Diego and drove out to a remote spot in the California desert not far from the US/MX border. It was there that we placed 1-gallon jugs of water in highly trafficked migrant paths.
The number one question I have gotten is…why? While the question itself baffles me, the answer is simple; because everyone deserves a chance at life! According to the Border Angels website, “Following 1994, when the US government implemented its most inhumane border enforcement policies ever, more than 11,000 sons and daughters, sisters and brothers, husbands and wives have died. Their main cause of death? Dehydration.” No matter what your political views may be. Whether you’re a Democrat or Republican. Whether you’re conservative or liberal. I hope we all can agree that no one deserves to die in the desert.
In 2018, my resolution is to get more involved. It’s one thing to hide behind a computer and spout our beliefs and the changes we want to see. But until we’re willing to do something, we’re just part of the problem. We have to be the change we want to see in the world. Merely talking won’t suffice. So I’ll be doing another water drop in the early months of 2018 with Border Angels. I’ll also be donating my time to other charities and organizations I stand behind in 2018. I hope you’ll join me.
