Angel Island Perimeter Loop

California boasts some amazing state parks. Among them, Angel Island. This historic site, the former left coast immigration station, offers a few different trails to check out. But the best way to see the most the island has to offer is by hiking the Angel Island Perimeter Loop trail.

The only way to access the island is by boat. You can charter a ferry in Tiburon, but make sure you arrive early so you have time to see everything. I arrived after lunch, and the last ferry off the island was at 5:30pm. So, my hike was rushed and I did not get to see everything I wanted to. If you miss the last ferry, you’ll either have to sleep under the stars or charter a taxi. Water taxis run around $60 per person, with a 2 person minimum (as of June 2018).

This particular trail is 100% paved as it follows the tram route. That also means it is ADA and stroller friendly. It is a rather long loop, so be prepared to get a good workout in or to turn around should you decide to venture out with a wheelchair or stroller.

The trail is mostly flat with a couple of hills. I recommend taking the trail counterclockwise so that you’ll be hitting more of the intense hills on the downside. The trams also run counterclockwise, so you’ll be hiking the same way as “traffic.”

The most exciting thing about this island is that there is designated backcountry! Complete with backcountry camping!!! So if you really want to see all the history Angel Island has to offer, I highly recommend a planned overnight. You know I’ll be back next year to do just that with my favorite Mermaid.
