Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire.

During the back half of our second day in Yellowstone National Park, we hiked both the Black Sands Basin trail and the Upper Geyser Basin.
Black Sands Basin was beautiful, and the highlights were definitely Saphire Pool and Rainbow Pool. The colors rival even those of the Grand Prismatic! However, don’t let the name fool you…..there is hardly any black sand to be found. According to YellowstoneNationalPark.com, “Black Sand Basin…was originally named the Emerald Group by A.C. Peale in 1878. But turn of the century tourists began calling it Black Sand Basin because of the small fragments of black obsidian sand which cover portions of the basin.” We did not really see any of the black sand while we were there. And other tourists made note, rather vocally, about the lack of black sand as well.
We ended our day parking at the Old Faithful Inn to hike the Upper Geyser Basin area; a geothermal section of the park that hosts more than 150 geysers right outside the Inn’s doors! This section of the Park is pretty spectacular. And you could easily spend an entire day walking around and waiting for geysers to erupt.

We didn’t time our hike to see any eruptions, but got really lucky that we saw one of the big ones. This turned into a double digit hike day (just shy of 15 miles), and my feet needed a break! So, I decided to rest at the benches in front of Beehive Geyser. Beehive erupts erratically, so our timing couldn’t have been better. After waiting about 15 minutes, we were treated to a show as Beehive erupts to heights of 150-200 feet. I dare say, it was even more spectacular to watch than Old Faithful.
With over an hours worth of video from the day, I decided to split the YouTube Video into two parts. Check out Part 2 below! Missed part 1?
