Our Honeymoon Road Trip: Day 6, Part 1

The day had finally come. It was time for us to say our goodbyes to Yellowstone National Park, and head south. It was bittersweet. While I was eager to sleep in a bed that was not the one at the Old Faithful Inn, I didn’t want to leave this park so rich with life and lava!

We got lucky leaving early, because there was a ton of road construction happening on Grand Loop between the Old Faithful and West Thumb areas. But because of our early departure, we didn’t get stuck in any of the promised daily traffic. We stopped at one of the many Continental Divide markers to get some pictures and just admire the magnitude of it all before heading to West Thumb to hike the West Thumb Geyser Basin Trail.

The ADA accessible one-mile trail does a figure 8 in two loops, right along the banks of Yellowstone Lake. There were a swarm of bugs (possibly mosquitos) along the shoreline, but it was still an very enjoyable trail. On our way back to the car, we encountered an elk blocking our way. Luckily there was another access point to the parking lot as this particular elk was pretty aggressive. As always, give wildlife all the space they need. If they’re blocking the trail, go back and wait it out, or find another way to get to your destination.

Once we left West Thumb, we headed South to Grand Teton National Park. But that’s a post for another day!
